Greener Schools
by Clare McDougall, Head of npower Greener Schools Programme
Published:  06 December, 2007

Last month npower launched the ‘Greener Schools Programme’- a £20 million, five year initiative designed to make UK schools more sustainable. The programme aims to reach over 2,500 schools by providing a combination of ‘green makeovers’, including free energy audits, helping to implement tailor made energy efficiency measures to reduce the school’s carbon footprint and educating children on how to be ‘greener’.

To engage school children in a fun and interactive way, we are rolling-out Climate Cop Academies around the UK to teach children simple things that they can do to save energy and empower them to share their knowledge with friends and families.

The npower Greener Schools Programme follows the Government’s National Framework for Sustainable Schools and focuses on:

Children

Thousands of 7 - 11 year old school children will be taking part in the Climate Cops Academy, which has been designed to educate them about energy saving in a fun and dynamic way. To inspire the pupils in this age group, we’ve created the Climate Cops - three ordinary kids seeking out ways to save energy and help the planet: Will, Oscar, Skye and their polar bear K’eyush are Climate Cops cadets and we want as many kids as possible to help them. These characters will be brought to life for the children through fun activity days, education resources and the dedicated, interactive website with games - www.climatecops.com.

Curriculum

The Climate Cop learning resources have been developed to be a creative set of tools, which will help teachers deliver stimulating lessons and exciting assemblies. These resources are printed and come with a CD-ROM and include PowerPoint presentations, information cards, worksheets, posters, video footage, animated diagrams and assembly plans. They will help deliver curriculum based understanding of energy efficiency in Science, Geography, Citizenship, Environmental Studies and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) – with additional links to Maths, English, Careers Education and PSHE (Personal, Social & Health Education) /PSD.

Campus

Schools taking part in the scheme will be offered free energy audits by trained professionals, advice on how to lower their carbon emissions and, where possible, practical help and funding towards energy efficiency and microgeneration measures including wind, solar or ground-source equipment.

Community

The programme has been developed to raise awareness around the importance of energy saving in the wider community.

The campaign underlines our commitment to protecting the future of UK schools and the environment. We’re hoping the Climate Cops will empower children and inspire them to be heroes in tackling the causes of climate change - both in their homes and at school. The aim is to engage and excite children about making a difference - adults have tried their best but now it’s the kids’ turn to save the Earth.

We hope that over the next few years, npower can make a real difference in UK schools and educate the next generation about being green through this programme.
