This cutting edge building envelope solution was chosen by our team for its ability to accelerate the build process; its contribution to energy efficiency and its design flexibility.
Apollo is known for its expertise in working in occupied school environments, so our decision to use NUDURA formed part of a wider plan, designed to cause minimal disruption to the school. NUDURA forms have allowed us to make each building envelope watertight earlier in the programme than traditional methods, and we have been able to begin fitting the building out six to eight weeks early.
The Woodside Inclusive Learning campus is being constructed with sustainability firmly in mind and NUDURA will contribute significantly towards achieving greater overall energy efficiency through good thermal insulation and air permeability.
In fact, in 2010, NUDURA ICF technology was used to build the first zero carbon school in the USA.
The NUDURA forms are produced from recycled or recyclable material, using no ozone depleting processes, so they produce little waste during construction and emit no CFCs or HCFCs.
The double foam insulated concrete core acts as a very effective sound barrier, and since NUDURA does not support mould growth, the resulting building becomes a healthy working environment that is easier to heat, ventilate and cool.
Because this system also offers a great deal of design flexibility, we were able to accommodate a design which replicated the architectural features of Woodside’s other existing buildings.
And two final points in NUDURA’s favour: the blocks arrive folded flat, allowing for easy handling and onsite storage, and it can be installed using both trades and semi-skilled labour.
To date, using this innovative system has allowed us to provide a high quality and efficient service for our client and we look forward to the opportunity of trialling it further on future builds.
