Portakabin urges schools to prepare for winter
Published:  15 December, 2011

Portakabin is urging schools to make sure they are prepared to avoid the disastrous effect of burst pipes; advice includes:

• Make sure heating is on a constant setting at 5°-10°C if the building is left unoccupied at weekends or longer periods.

• Ensure water pipes in unheated areas are well insulated; if left exposed fit trace heating ˆ or turn off the water supply and drain down.

• Have a detailed plan so that should a building become unusable, operations can be up and running as quickly as possible.

• Collate and distribute contact numbers for staff and trades people who can respond quickly out of hours in an emergency.

• Consider solutions for temporary power supplies, furniture, data communications, security and clean-up operations.

With over 50 locations from Inverness to Plymouth, Portakabin has the largest hire centre network in the UK and so is ideally placed to provide emergency accommodation to schools – often within hours – in the event of an urgent situation such as fire, flooding or the discovery of asbestos.
