School invasion is nothing scary
Comment by, Steve Quinn, Managing Director

Since Jamie Oliver hit Britain with his school dinner shock tactics and his anti-fast food campaigns, the school catering industry has slowly moved away from artery clogging meals. Someone who has embraced such a progression is school catering company Cucina’s Managing Director, Steve Quinn, who is committed to providing quality, healthy meals at all schools.

“It’s important that children get nutritious meals that help them both physically and mentally, especially whilst they’re at school.” Steve continues; “There is a direct correlation between eating unhealthy fatty food and the mind’s inability to concentrate. These types of food can make children tired and unresponsive, which is why it is imperative to give them the food they need to develop in school successfully and support the work going on in the classroom.”

“Something central to children eating healthily, is learning about what’s in everyday foods, what additives are and what the best foods are for growing minds and bodies. At Cucina we support this type of education, with kitchen theatre, introducing unusual foods in a fun way and by adopting a ‘seeds to plate’ philosophy for the kitchens. We grow vegetables for the kitchens and ‘stealthy soups’ in as many sites as we can, where gardens are provided for students to grow fruit and vegetables in and we help schools promote horticulture on the curriculum.”

With recent statistics showing the UK to be the third most obese country in the world* it is time to make a change, one that Steve Quinn has been working towards since he began in the food service nearly 30 years ago.
