Learners offered a unique qualification to enhance careers
Published:  14 November, 2011

The Butler Trust has chosen to work with national qualification provider, NCFE using its customised award service to offer its annual award scheme winners training to enhance their skills across the criminal justice system.

The Trust is an independent charity, set up in 1985, which aims to celebrate, support and share good practice in UK correctional settings. It works with prisons, probation and youth justice services across the UK.

The Butler Trust’s Customised Award in Developing and Disseminating Good Practice is equivalent to Level 3 and aims to contribute towards the improvement in quality of practice in prisons, probation and youth justice.

Access to the award is achieved through The Butler Trust Annual Awards, a national recognition scheme which celebrates the outstanding work achieved by employees, volunteers and partners of the correctional parts of the criminal justice system.

Award winners and commendees, who work within correctional settings, go on to study for the NCFE accredited award, showcasing their commitment to good practice and life-long learning.

Simon Shephard, Director at The Butler Trust, said: “Three years ago we designed the Developing and Disseminating Good Practice award, which was accredited and given the seal of approval by awarding body NCFE.

“We have forged a very strong relationship with the NCFE team which has helped us offer the award to 70 award winners and commendees. Feedback has been exceptional from learners on the course, which is offered over two workshop days, so it fits around their daily roles. The beauty of working alongside NCFE is the flexibility the award offers learners.”

Formal tuition has taken place in various training settings across the UK, including, London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Rugby. During and after completion of the Level 3 course, learners receive ongoing support to ensure their studies assist their role within their organisations and that they continue to progress their own personal development.

David Grailey, Chief Executive at NCFE, said: “The Butler Trust is a shining example of how organisations can develop their in-house training to enhance an employee’s skill set as well as helping to aid development within the workplace.

“We were delighted to accredit this bespoke award, designed specifically for those working in correctional settings. It provides an opportunity for people to take a step back into education.

“We look forward to strengthening our relationship with The Butler Trust as we explore different avenues to help benefit the organisation and its employees in the future.”

NCFE Accreditation Services allow organisations across the UK to gain formal recognition from an awarding organisation for personalised in-house training programmes which have been written and created with specific needs in mind.

NCFE is a national awarding organisation which works with 2,000 colleges, schools and training providers and employers to offer 520 qualifications on the QCF in a range of subject areas. For more information regarding NCFE courses, visit www.ncfe.org.uk or call 0191 239 8000
