Are you sitting comfortably?
Published:  03 October, 2011

Students can suffer if you choose your school furniture as an afterthought. That’s the message from the Steltube Group, one of the UK’s longest established designers and manufacturers of furniture for the education market.

“The right choice of seating, desks and storage is critical to the overall appearance and functionality of a classroom, as well as having a huge effect on the concentration levels and postural health of the students,” says Gareth Spero, Steltube’s managing director. “Too often when planning the building or refurbishment of a school, the loose furniture requirements of the classrooms and other areas are treated as an afterthought. They are only considered once plans for the design and construction of the building works have been agreed and budgeted. This can mean the fitting out is not as well thought out as it could be because of time or budget constraints and can affect student learning.”

As it prepares to mark its thirtieth year in business, the Steltube Group has cemented its position as a leader in the educational furniture market with a proven reputation for supplying quality, durable furniture to nurseries, schools and colleges.

Based in the coastal town of Maldon, Essex, the group sells around £5 million of furniture per year, all of which is manufactured and assembled at its purpose-built 45,000 sq ft factory site, and delivered by the group’s own transport fleet.

Ashley Mooney, Commercial Director, comments: “We believe our commitment to UK manufacturing offers real benefits to our customers in terms of quality control, delivery times and customer service. As a group we are proud of our long history of manufacturing in the UK and of providing local employment and support to the economy.”

The Steltube Group offers a minimum 5 year guarantee on all its products, and has free UK mainland delivery within 15 working days for all orders.   All its chairs and desks comply with BS EN1729, the EU’s recently introduced standards for the strength, stability and dimensions of educational furniture.

The Steltube Group manufactures in excess of 10,000 unique product lines including many of the best known and longest established brands in the educational furniture market.   These include the Masterstack Skidbase chair which has been manufactured for over 25 years, with over 3 million sold, and the Harmony chair which has been manufactured for over 10 years, with over 1 million sold.  Other successful brands include the Springfield range of classroom tables which have been supplied to schools in Essex and beyond for over 20 years, and the Teena range of classroom storage units.

More recently, the Steltube Group has introduced the Smile range of premium classroom furniture, a wood-based range which takes its cue from the flexible, high-quality furniture used by schools in continental Europe. The range has height-adjustable chairs and desks.  The Group has also introduced the Tomeg range of modern, attractive colour and finish options which will brighten up any nursery or primary school classroom.

The Steltube Group prides itself on its customer service and throughout its history has worked with customers ranging from individual schools and nurseries, through to furniture dealerships and large local authority purchasing consortia.

The Group specializes in supplying furniture for new-build and school refurbishment projects, and has worked, amongst others, with ESA Macintosh, ESPO, The Consortium, Kent County Council and West Sussex County Council. Services include designing and manufacturing furniture to non-standard specifications, delivering to tight, rolling delivery schedules, and flexible costings

“Steltube focuses on providing its customers with great furniture at a competitive price, with service which exceeds their expectations”, says Gareth Spero.
