FILMCLUB LAUNCHES ‘GLOBAL LITERACY’ FILM SEASON
Published:  08 September, 2011

In support of UNESCO’s 45th ‘International Literacy Day on September 8th the education charity FILMCLUB (www.filmclub.org) is launching a special season of international films highlighting the importance of literacy in people’s lives and the disparity of literacy levels across the globe. 250,000 schoolchildren belonging to the charity will be encouraged to watch, discuss and review specially selected titles ranging from ‘Akeelah & The Bee’, about an impoverished girl’s exceptional talent for spelling, to ‘Eleanor’s Secret’, ‘The Class’ and Oscar-winning drama ‘The Lives of Others’.

With independent research showing that school film clubs are a highly effective way to both stimulate debate about topical subjects and engage children in writing, FILMCLUB’s ‘Global Literacy’ season aims to raise awareness of issues relating to literacy levels across the globe while at the same time helping members develop their own literacy by writing reviews for the website.

Like UNESCO, FILMCLUB - which is funded by the Department of Education and The BFI Lottery Transition Fund, and supported by LOVEFiLM - is committed to increasing opportunities for the poorest children in society. Many of the 7000 UK schools it works with are in disadvantaged areas, 93% of teachers involved with the scheme say it makes culture available to children who wouldn’t otherwise experience it and nearly 60% say it helps close the gap between the highest and lowest achievers.
