School children need clean and healthy toilets
Comment by Graham Bucktrout, Managing Director, Lecico
Published:  07 July, 2011

It’s very clear that many education establishments are still lagging behind when it comes to providing adequate toilet facilities as set out in the Building Schools for the Future programme. This programme clearly stated that toilets and changing facilities need to be designed to be suitable for all pupils, staff, visitors including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

This puts huge pressure on schools to comply with these new performance standards.  According to recent research, there is a clear link between the school environment and the behaviour of pupils where good functional toilets and high standards of cleanliness can help reduce pupil bullying and vandalism.

The state of school toilets affects both children's physical and psychological health and having toilets which are unpleasant and in disrepair can cause serious, long-term health problems.   Graham Bucktrout Managing Director of Lecico said “School toilets which are safe, cleaned properly and in good working order are essential for our children and it is up to us as parents to ensure that we send our children not to a school just for its education and academic achievements but look at the wider picture of their health and well being”
