Netintelligence helps Durham and Manchester protect young children
Published:  07 July, 2011

Many organisations have used Netintelligence to successfully protect children online. It was the e-security software of choice for Home Access, a government initiative to improve children’s access to computers at home. Durham County Council was one of the participating authorities.

Bill Pattison, project leader for ICT services at Durham County Council, says: “If you give a child a laptop to take home then the responsibility does not end at the school gate. Working with Netintelligence meant we could lock-down access to certain social networking sites like Facebook for younger children and easily track what sites were being looked at by each machine.”

Netintelligence provides protection for laptops, PCs and now iPads and iPhones, regardless of location or how they connect to internet. The information collected is used to create new policies for computer access.

Manchester City Council used Netintelligence to deliver internet access to vulnerable children.

Mark Thorne, security analyst with Manchester City Council, says: “The children were satisfied that the system was there to protect them and it was actually more effective at filtering sites with harmful content but allowing sites which are educational but deal with serious topics. Now we can manage all computers centrally and monitor how individuals use the computers. ”

Educational intelligence company Schoolzone evaluated Netintelligence. It concluded: “It provides additional safety for internet use and protection for schools using instant messaging. Definitely a tool you can’t do without.”
