Software for protecting pupils online
Published:  07 July, 2011

Pupil’s safety online is a critical issue for everyone in education. We are constantly challenged by technology to find new ways of preventing pupils accessing unsuitable material over the internet. The recent Bailey review into the commercialisation and sexualisation of children recommended that “the internet industry should ensure that customers must make an active choice over what sort of content they want to allow their children to access.”

This applies to schools as much as to individual parents.

This is why at Westcoastcloud we’ve been working with schools and local authorities to protect children online. With the world moving mobile we realised that schools needed to control access across all internet-enabled devices on their premises. Over the past 18 months we’ve been developing Netintelligence to filter and block inappropriate or harmful content regardless of how children access the internet.

Netintelligence is the only online security product to carry the BSI PAS74 Kitemark standard for the protection of children online.

Schools need to be able to encourage pupils to use the internet for their studies without fear. As CEOP, the Child Exploitation & Online Protection centre, explains, it’s about “encouraging young people to have fun with technology whilst staying in control of the risks.”

If we are serious about the role the internet is going to play in our children’s education we need to be equally serious about protecting them online.
