The research shows a significant increase in the popularity of cruise holidays at a time when the total number of foreign holidays continues to decline. The phenomenon looks set to continue into next year, with cruise passenger numbers forecasted to reach two million by 2014.
Responding to this growth, leading Awarding Organisation NCFE has launched the Level 2 Award in the Introduction to the Passenger Shipping Industry – a qualification designed for those seeking employment within the passenger shipping / travel and tourism industry.
It supports Britain’s booming maritime sector which is a key contributor to the UK economy, employing 196,400 people in 6,700 enterprises.
The award has been supported by Carnival Cruise Lines, the Merchant Navy Skills Training Board and the Maritime Skills Alliance.
Philip Wells, Secretary of the Maritime Skills Alliance commented: “The Maritime Skills Alliance, which represents the wider maritime sector, was very pleased to support the development of this qualification.
“Many young people are unaware of the wide range of job opportunities available within this industry, ranging from working on passenger ferries on inland waters to being a crew member on one of the vast cruise ships that traverse the world.
“This qualification will provide a helpful introduction to the sector, and we hope to inspire some to seek a career within it.”
The award is a new addition to NCFE’s growing portfolio of Leisure, Travel and Tourism qualifications, which includes qualifications in Travel, Cabin Crew, Resort Representatives and Exercise and Fitness.
David Grailey, Chief Executive at NCFE said: “I’m delighted that the Award has gained endorsement from such key players in the shipping industry.
“With the leisure sector seeing such growth, it’s more important than ever that young people and employers have suitable training opportunities available to them.
“This qualification is ideal for those wanting to break into this exciting industry or those already working in the sector who would like to formalise and develop their existing experience and skills.”
