Nivea Sun celebrates 19 years in primary schools
Published:  27 May, 2011

This term, NIVEA SUN, the UK’s largest sun care brand*, is celebrating its 19th consecutive year of providing activities and resources for primary school teachers in the UK.

Buddy Up is NIVEA SUN’s innovative peer-to-peer campaign, now in its third year, which helps communicate important safer sun messages and encourages children to look out for themselves and others. The theme for 2011 is “Buddy Up – be Weatherwise” focussing on the topic of weather.  The comprehensive primary school programme incorporates new teaching resources for 5-7 and 8-11 year olds, an amazing schools competition, a brand new teacher-facing website and the return of Funshine News – a summer term e-newsletter for teachers. The programme is destined to reach more teachers and children than ever before.

When NIVEA SUN first went into the classroom material to help educate children about sun safety was virtually non-existent.  Since then a whole generation has grown up understanding the benefits of wearing high factor sun protection, staying in the shade in the middle of the day and other important advice, all thanks to the company’s year-on-year educational campaigns. Those first children, now adults, are hopefully following the lessons they learned in school as NIVEA SUN continues to lead the way and pioneer new sun safety initiatives.

New website

www.thesunwiseset.co.uk is the primary teachers’ one stop shop for everything to do with the Nivea Sun 2011 campaign. The site holds masses of teaching material, information about the new schools competition and teachers can register to receive the teacher e-newsletter, Funshine News.

2011 Teaching Resources

The imaginative programme for 2011 “Buddy Up – be Weatherwise” includes informative and engaging teaching content for primary school teachers to use in class to help pupils learn and understand a bit more about weather patterns, how weather forecasters gather their information and even how to build elements of a weather station. Resources are available for 5-7 and 8-11 age groups. All the resources are available from www.thesunwiseset.co.uk.

Schools Competition

To tie in with the weather theme, primary schools nationwide are invited to enter the “Buddy Up - Be Weatherwise!” competition where they could win a weather station for their school presented by a celebrity weather presenter!  To enter, pupils have to design their own weather symbol and write a short weather forecast using it. And the teachers of the winning pupils will win a NIVEA SUN goody bag worth over £50! Visit www.thesunwiseset.co.uk to enter.

Coming to an Inbox near you…

Teachers are invited to register for Funshine News – a weekly e-newsletter going out in the summer term containing all the new resources and other classroom material. And there are opportunities for teachers to apply for “Buddy Bands” for their class – UV sensitive silicone wristbands for children that change colour in response to the levels of UV light – a handy and visual reminder to cover-up and apply NIVEA SUN protection lotion. The first 1,000 teachers that sign up will automatically receive 30 Buddy Bands for their class. Go to www.thesunwiseset.co.uk to register to receive yours.

Buddy Up – be Weatherwise and keep your pupils safer under the sun!
