School lockers rule
Comment by Joeri Decae, Sales Director, Link Lockers

Joeri Decae, Link Lockers’ Sales Director, confirms that the Fire and Rescue Service’s increased focus on fire prevention over the last 12-18 months has led to more and more primary schools installing lockers.

Since the introduction of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order in 2006, which made The Fire and Rescue Service responsible for enforcing Fire Safety legislation, there has been an even greater focus on fire prevention in schools. To facilitate, fire officers have been conducting routine inspections in schools to ensure compliance. Significantly for schools, the Fire and Rescue Service introduced even tougher enforcement targets in 2010.

In line with these new rules, Fire Officers, during routine fire safety inspections in schools, are increasingly picking up on the fact that coats and bags cluttered on the floor could cause problems in an emergency situation. As a result there has been an increased demand from primary schools for Link Lockers’ metal locker and storage solutions.

Cathryn Downing, Headteacher at Stamford Park Junior School, in Altrincham, Greater Manchester confirms and said that the recent installation of lockers has had a dramatic effect on health and safety, making a “real difference” to the environment.

“The lockers have been a real hit with the pupils and staff,” she said. “The result has been dramatic, with no trip hazards from coats and bags on the floor and there has already been a reduction in lost property.”

Stamford Park secured funding from the Devolved Formula Capital (DFC) for its lockers, a three-year pot of money from the DfE, which closes in August 2011.

In addition to the option of using DFC funding, we also offer an innovative Locker Leasing Programme which allows schools to provide pupil lockers with no initial capital outlay.
