Managing ICT in the modern classroom
Published:  08 April, 2011

With technology continually evolving, the modern classroom has become an increasingly interactive, and exciting place to learn. Laptops are more popular than ever in education, with schools, colleges and universities often encouraging students to bring in their own ICT devices to work on.

Although this increased use of technology benefits students, it inevitably creates problems for securing, charging and managing a large quantity of ICT devices. So how can educational establishments ensure their equipment is ready to go?

With lots of students using laptops and tablets, it can sometimes be difficult to keep track of mobile ICT. Back in 2009, Bolton College had a similar problem before it came to LapSafe® Products.. According to IT Operations Manager Railton Knott, “Our students use a smart card system, and we wanted to use this to give them access to charged and secured laptops and record what equipment had been taken out of storage.

“After researching suppliers, it looked as if this type of product didn’t exist – but then we spoke to LapSafe®. They looked into configuring this product, and we went along to the BETT Show to discuss it. LapSafe® had teamed up with Dutch company NEDAP to provide an innovative solution to our initial requirements where other providers had failed.”

As a result, LapSafe® created the Diplomat™, a secure mulit-bay locker that tracks, monitors and safely charges laptops, netbooks and tablets in the quickest possible time. Using pin codes or smartcards to provide students and teachers with individual access to stored and charged equipment, the Diplomat™ eradicates concerns associated with the self-issue of mobile ICT.

The locker management system can link to a student database and enable teachers to track which student has taken, returned, or damaged a piece of equipment. This Radio Frequency Identification technology (RFID) is also perfect for colleges or universities, as the cabinet can be configured to grant access only to the students currently enrolled onto a course.

In addition, the Diplomat™ can ease the process of returning laptops or tablets through unique ultra-safe SmartLine™ technology.

SmartLine™ charging replaces adaptors with preconfigured charging leads to eliminate the problem of messy wires, saving time when equipment is removed and replaced into the cabinet. Alternatively, the individually locking bays can be configured with ChargeLine™ technology that can charge and secure any make of laptop or tablet, enabling students to store and charge their own devices, using the devices’ own AC adaptors.

The Diplomat™ provides an intelligent static solution for charging and monitoring laptops, but, with laptops often used across school grounds, many schools also require something more mobile. New for 2011, LapSafe® has introduced the ClassBuddy™ charging trolley as a cost effective solution to this problem.

The ClassBuddy ™ is perfect for schools with smaller budgets that refuse to compromise on safety. Combining surge and load protection, the ClassBuddy™ is safe, light and manoeuvrable, providing easy stowage for 15 laptops or 30 netbooks or tablets. Like all charging trolleys by LapSafe® Products, the ClassBuddy™ charges all devices simultaneously and can be manufactured with data transfer and wireless access to become a fully mobile ICT suite.

In many schools, colleges and universities, laptops, netbooks and tablets have dramatically revolutionised learning. Although charging and keeping track of so many devices is sometimes challenging, thanks to LapSafe® Products, managing ICT in the modern classroom can become easier and more cost effective.
