School dinners never tasted so good
Published:  08 April, 2011

Its official – sometimes school dinners taste even better than Mum’s home cooking. And Pabulum, contract caterer to the education sector, has proved it – producing a cookery book of pupils’ favourite recipes, complete with the children’s own illustrations of the dishes they like best.

The first edition of the Isle of Wight Primary Schools’ Cook Book has now been launched following an exciting event where printers Crossprint invited two pupils, whose pictures are featured in the book, to start the presses at their print headquarters in Newport, Isle of Wight.

The book was the brainchild of Pabulum’s Business Support team, who were overwhelmed by the response from children and parents to their nutritious range of healthy option school meals across many schools on the Isle of Wight. Kevin Phillips, Operations Manager for Pabulum on the Island explains, “Both children and parents have been so enthusiastic about the school meals that we decided to compile a book of their favourite recipes – especially when several Mums told us that their children actually preferred our take on a number of traditional favourites to their home-cooked versions!”

Phillips reports that the response to the cook book idea was immediate and huge – highlighting the high level of interest and enthusiasm everyone shares for healthy eating in schools. Island-based company Crossprint was engaged to produce the book and local Isle of Wight artist, Besley, was commissioned to design the front cover and help choose the two winners of the drawing competition that was unrolled across participating schools to find the best children’s contributions.

Besley, who works regularly with The County Press, commented: “The standard of entries was very high and it was really difficult to choose just two winners. Everyone’s enthusiasm and talent really shone through!”

The book (proceeds for which will go to charity) will be available for sale through participating schools and Pabulum will also be showcasing it at several outside events over the next year as overwhelming proof that nutritious, healthy school meals are the way to go. “We’re delighted with the book,” says Phillips. “Not only does it truly reflect Pabulum’s commitment to delivering the best school meals possible, but also demonstrates the children’s enthusiasm for our meals – and they will always be the best ambassadors we could wish for in spreading the word that healthy is best!”. The book is now available from participating schools.
