Connecting with sustainability in a meaningful way
Published:  08 April, 2011

Harnessing fresh air from wind in place of air con, tubular skylights, balcony classrooms, even resident eco-ninjas… Key Stage 2 pupils from across the UK were invited to investigate the sustainability of their school building and enter their own design for a more environmentally friendly school building as part of architecture education organisation, Open-City’s, My Green School initiative.

Competition judge and Senior Lecturer in Primary and Early Years Education at Middlesex University, Fiona Bailey, believes the impact of Open-City’s programme on primary schools is invaluable: “My Green School is a fabulous initiative which presents teachers and children with an opportunity to connect with sustainability in a creative and meaningful way. The quality and diversity of the entries is very impressive, as is seeing children engaging so with such an important topic.”

Open-City’s My Green School initiative embeds understanding of sustainable design in young people through providing teachers with a comprehensive and creative guide, linked to core subjects in the Key Stage 2 curriculum. Exploration of eco-design helps unlock the teaching potential within each school’s building and delivers designs for the ultimate eco-friendly school.
