Portakabin calls for change in perceptions
Published:  08 March, 2011

Portakabin has welcomed the Government’s move towards off-site construction as a procurement solution following the Education Capital Review. However, the company is calling for a change in thinking among some contractors, architects and schools to help address any reluctance to embrace the opportunities and efficiency improvements that steel-framed buildings can bring.

Programme times can be halved and there is much less disruption to teaching. Waste and vehicle movements can be reduced by up to 90% and thermal efficiency is improved for lower running costs.

“Many schools, local authorities and contractors already share our vision for delivering really exciting school buildings that are factory-built but can exceed the highest specification bespoke buildings in terms of performance and quality of the teaching environment,” comments Portakabin director David Shaw.

“However, we still need a shift in perceptions to help drive the changes forward and get the best from off-site solutions. Our modular buildings provide space, proportion, robustness and high levels of natural light to create stimulating education environments.”
