Through sponsorship, Randstad Education is giving three primary teachers or education managers, with a minimum of three years’ management experience, the opportunity to volunteer through the VSO programme, as teacher support officers in Ghana, by providing supply cover to the applicants’ schools free of charge for the full period of their placement.
Each of the three placements will be for a period of three months: one starting 11th September 2011, one on 8th January 2012 and one on 7th May 2012.
The VSO Ghana Education programme seeks to improve the quality of education for all. The Global Skills Share placements will directly contribute to two of its strategic objectives: improving teaching and learning of education and strengthening the capacity of Ghana Education Service staff.
Volunteers will support improvements by working in teacher training colleges and with groups of schools on developing teaching methods in Ghana. They will also work within the mainstream education system to overcome the barriers facing marginalised groups, for example, improving the provision of inclusive education. By improving classroom techniques so that lessons are enjoyable, practical and interactive, more children will leave school with skills and knowledge that will improve their chances in life.
Championing the initiative, Caryn Cooper, head of marketing services at Randstad said: “There are so many benefits to teachers taking part in the Global Skills Share programme. Not only will they learn about and contribute their skills to Ghana’s education system, making a difference to the way that others work for the rest of their lives, but on a personal level they’ll also become more desirable employees.
“And the teacher’s school benefits too. Randstad Education’s sponsorship ensures pupils receive consistent supply cover in their teacher’s absence, free of charge to the school, while they look forward to learning all about Ghana, from first hand experience, on their teacher’s return.”
