Matting in a class of its own
Published:  11 February, 2011

A ‘pop up’ temporary swimming pool initiative designed to encourage people to learn to swim in London has been installed with Heronrib safety matting.

Heronrib, manufactured by Plastic Extruders Ltd, was laid on the pool surround to provide high slip resistance underfoot while also providing a comfortable and hygienic surface on which to stand.

The tented 12 x 6 metre pool, manufactured from galvanised steel and suspended from the ground using a framework, forms part of the ‘Make a Splash’ scheme backed by the Mayor of London. Moved to several locations over the course of each summer, it is used both for swimming lessons school children as well as by the local community.

Heronrib has a vinyl open grid construction with raised profile underbars which help water to drain away easily in all directions. This means that the embossed surface remains relatively dry and highly slip resistant. The matting is very hardwearing yet comfortable to stand on while the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal additives ensure it is hygienic for bare feet and reduce cross-contamination. The matting is normally supplied in 10m rolls which makes for quick and easy rolling out and up at various sites. It also means that the number of seams is reduced and the potential for tripping minimised.

Heronrib is available in several colours and in widths of 50cm, 1m and 1.22m. Samples, information and Performance Certificates are available from Plastic Extruders Ltd.
