OCR Software Empowers Students
Published:  11 February, 2011

Recent experience shows that scanning and digitising books, magazines, exam papers, study materials and many other types of documents, using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software can provide an efficient way of producing accessible learning materials and therefore enable newly found levels of independence for pupils.

Digitisation is made easy by OCR software, such as ABBYY FineReader 10, which analyses a scanned document and converts it to an editable and searchable electronic file. OCR systems today are highly sophisticated and can read various types of documents with a high degree of accuracy. Professional OCR tools are able to faithfully reproduce complex pages with tables, images and other non-textual components. The digital document is then extremely flexible for editing, searching and converting to different file types, applying techniques such as text-to-speech. This technology allows children to read and learn more independently.
