BUY-A-BRICK AND OWN A PIECE OF MANCHESTER’S HISTORY
Published:  10 December, 2010

Chetham’s School of Music has launched its new public fundraising campaign to ‘Buy-a-Brick’ and own a piece of Manchester’s history. For as little as £10, people across the region can pledge their support for the School and buy one of the 500,000 bricks being handmade for the £36m New School Building and Concert Hall.

The campaign is part of the School’s ‘Raise the Roof’ public appeal to raise £1million towards its new 21st Century state-of the-art learning environment and performance venues. Works started on the project in April 2010 and is scheduled for completion in early 2012.

Claire Hickman, Head of Chetham’s said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to pledge their support to help us secure the future of Chetham’s, enabling us to raise funds to complete the fit-out of a much needed 21st Century New School Building.

“Chetham’s has been part of the City for hundreds of years and now our supporters have the chance to be a part of the New School Building and the next chapter in our history.”

Designed to provide Chetham’s with dedicated space to develop its hugely successful community music programme, the nation’s leading music school will become much more accessible to the public. The doors will also be opened to a far larger audience when the new 400-seat Concert Hall is unveiled. The New School building will also house all of the music teaching and academic classrooms required for its 290 students.

The New School Building is a groundbreaking step for Chetham’s and the musical life of Manchester. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to increase the School’s contribution to local and national culture, and to continue producing world-class musicians for generations to come.
