Writing reviews is an important and popular aspect of FILMCLUB, with around 3000 reviews posted on the website each week, half of them by boys. Research into the impact of the scheme, which is free to all state schools, shows that watching, discussing and reviewing a broad range of movies is boosting children’s literacy and critical skills. Crucially, even children usually disinterested in English are inspired to write reviews for the FILMCLUB website and through the website, teachers are able to monitor their progress.
“Some of my boys who are reluctant writers are eager to complete film reviews and do so to such a high quality that I was pleasantly surprised, as they do not show that level of capability in class. Sam Linton, Deputy Headteacher
“One teacher commented recently that since a member of her class joined FILMCLUB the child’s writing has greatly improved. A boy in my own class, a reluctant writer, was chosen as a regular reviewer for FILMCLUB, which in turn boosted his writing confidence and his self esteem.” Edward Gunn, Teacher
Founded in 2008 by film director Beeban Kidron (Bridget Jones’ Diary: The Edge Of Reason) and educationalist Lindsay Mackie, FILMCLUB provides free weekly access to thousands of classic and popular titles as well as to film industry news, events and talent. Through its website it encourages members to watch, discuss and review a wide range of films – from blockbusters to foreign language films, black and white classics and absorbing documentaries. Special sections on the site devoted to ‘Writers’, ‘Films of Books’ and ‘Myths and Legends’ can be used by teachers to bring writing to life and introduce children, through film, to books they wouldn’t normally read. Also available for teachers are a series of fun and informative, free downloadable film guides packed with facts, review writing tips and talking points. Since it launched over 5000 schools have joined the scheme, with 160,000* young people benefiting every week.
"Like many great ideas, FILMCLUB is a simple one - and it has come along at just the right moment... There is compelling evidence of the potential of films to contribute to the development of a richer diet [of education] that can help to turn on many more youngsters to learning. FILMCLUB has helped to inspire creativity, improvements in literacy, writing and oral language, and an awareness of other cultures "
