Throughout the week, firefighters from NFRS will be visiting schools across the city and county to deliver RiskWatch - the main fire safety education programme delivered by firefighters to children aged 3 – 14. RiskWatch reinforces the messages of this year’s campaign week - the dangers of matches and lighters.
Firefighters will lead fire safety presentations using interactive classroom-based resources to make sessions enjoyable so that the children learn vital messages about how to stay safe, avoid injuries such as burns and scalds as well as the implications of playing with fire. Children are also encouraged to take home and repeat these messages to parents and siblings through a range of literature supporting key fire safety messages. In addition, firefighters will deliver hard hitting arson related presentations to young people in secondary schools aged 11-14.
“The Schools’ Fire Safety Week forms an important part of The Fire Fighters Charity and the Fire Kills Campaign quest to encourage primary schools to work with their local fire and rescue service,” said Catherine Bostock, Education Team Manager at NFRS. “The main aim of the campaign is to teach children key fire safety messages that are easy to remember and can be passed on to friends and siblings, helping to prevent fires.”
