Show your support to Armed Forces Day by using curriculum-linked assemblies
Published:  18 June, 2010

This year Armed Forces Day is on 26th June. The day is an annual opportunity for the nation to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from current Service personnel to Service families, veterans and cadets.

Across the country people are getting involved: communities are holding local events and businesses are showing their support through special discounts for the Armed Forces. Involve your school in supporting our nation’s Armed Forces – past, present and future.

There are two assemblies – one for a primary audience, and one for secondary. Each comes with comprehensive teacher’s notes and extension activity ideas for getting involved further. Both assemblies also include regional curriculum links.

It asks pupils to consider ‘why’ in simple terms: Why have Armed Forces today? And why should we celebrate and support their decisions and work?

Pupils are guided to make links from how they act in school or their communities to how nations and large groups of people act towards each other – and how some people choose to help others. The assemblies offer ideas about values and beliefs, peoples’ rights and responsibilities, and the need to respect others.
