Neville helps bullied children smile again
Published:  10 May, 2010

Soccer legend Gary Neville is backing a campaign which aims to bring a smile to hundreds of bullied young people.

Bully Free Zone will launch its new Save a Smile campaign on Monday, May 10 with Gary as special guest.

The England and Manchester United player recently became a patron of the charity and has pledged his support to give young people a reason to smile again.

The Save a Smile campaign aims to highlight the fact that young people who are being bullied often have nothing to smile about.

Constant name-calling, intimidation and even physical abuse can result in a young person becoming withdrawn, lonely and extremely sad.

Bully Free Zone offers direct support to those being bullied and works hard to raise awareness of bullying and how to stop it in schools and organisations throughout the North West.

The Save a Smile campaign will help to increase awareness of the effects of bullying behaviour.

In addition, the campaign aims to celebrate things that are worth smiling about and encourages people of all ages to share photographs, anecdotes and even videos of the things that make them grin from ear to ear.

A Smile Day on Friday, May 21 will also be launched and will feature fund raising activities in aid of Bully Free Zone.

Whether it be a crazy hair day, pyjama party or three-legged race, Bully Free Zone wants to hear about any wacky events taking place that will make them smile and help raise valuable funds for the charity.

Executive manager of Bully Free Zone, Nicola Schofield, said: “The idea behind this campaign is that we all deserve to smile. However, young people who are being bullied, who feel helpless and alone, often have nothing to smile about. By raising awareness and by dealing with bullying we can change this, and by fundraising for Bully Free Zone we can continue to deliver much-needed support and help to Save a Smile.
