Délifrance pioneers range of healthy eating breads
Published:  15 May, 2007

Leading French bread manufacturer Délifrance UK Ltd is targeting schools and colleges with a range of healthy eating breads ideal which ensure that mealtime pleasure goes hand in hand with nutrition.

Following on from its successful launch of a reduced salt baguette, Délifrance has introduced the DéliVital range, which comprises the ‘Vitality’ seeded baguette and the ‘Omega 3’ white baguette, to satisfy sandwich supplier and consumer demands for healthier eating solutions for schools.

The Vitality baguette is packed with sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, wheat germ and fibre, offering a natural source of vitamin B1 and B9 (folic acid), minerals such as magnesium, iron and fibre, essential for a healthy nervous system, immune system, digestive system and bone growth. The Omega 3 baguette is a good source of fibre and Omega 3, an essential fatty acid, (ESA) vital for maintaining a healthy heart.

The Délifrance philosophy fits with that of The School Food Trust, which recommends that ‘bread should be available on a daily basis’. However Délifrance also asserts that a balanced diet and moderation are key to a successful healthy lifestyle and is playing its part by providing the education catering industry with information and nutritional choices, while respecting the tastes of the students.

Délifrance UK’s Category Manager Lucy Pickersgill said: “The Omega 3 Group states that 6% of the total dietary energy intake should be from essential fatty acids and the Department of Health recommended average fibre intake is 18g a day. Our tests have shown that eating one Délifrance Omega 3 baguette (100g), counts as 49.2% of your recommended daily fibre intake and 30% of your recommended daily Omega 3 intake.”

According to the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in a survey of school meals, only 23% of boys and 29% of girls consumed oily fish, which contains omega 3, during the survey week.

With its range of vitamins and minerals, the DeliVital baguettes will help schools keep children’s meals simple and yet healthy.
