The test of time
Published:  15 May, 2007

Building and refurbishment work in the education sector has never been higher on the agenda. But will the materials you choose for your school stay looking good all day long, asks Linda Briffett of interior surfaces specialists Altro?

If you want your building to look clean, safe and attractive, then you will be well aware of the challenges you face on a daily basis. Initial outlay has to be balanced with maintenance costs and effort, and you’re always treading the fine line between aesthetics and safety.

With this in mind, it is vitally important that manufacturers such as Altro continue to respond to the needs of their customers and help them to overcome the challenges they face. As a company, we listen to our customers’ needs and respond both in terms of our product offering and service – a constant challenge with the ever increasing pace of change.

When I first joined Altro rather more years ago than I care to acknowledge, the traditional safety flooring available on the market was very much suited to back of house areas and industrial types of environment. The emphasis was very much on performance – indeed, the quality of Altro’s safety flooring has never been disputed - but the vast majority of floor coverings on offer were rather lacking in terms of design.

With ever increasing demands on the school budget, paying for the floor to be correctly cleaned by contract cleaning staff often conflicted with other more pressing needs, such as teaching resources. So, in response to customer needs, we developed a safety flooring incorporating Maxis™ Easyclean technology that was designed to be routinely wet mopped, with an occasional going over with a scrubbing machine. Maxis technology went a long way to make cleaning and maintenance easier, and was shown to have a significant impact on life cycle costings. It is now included in all our new safety flooring products.

Linked very closely to cleaning is appearance retention. Floors in busy school buildings can look good at 8am in the morning but after the ingress of several hundred pupils and staff, they often tell a very different story. Our next challenge was to come up with a floor that looked as good at the end of the day as it did first thing in the morning.

New Altro Mirica is an innovative range of safety flooring developed to retain its attractive appearance throughout the day, even in high traffic areas. Its modern patterned look is designed to minimise the visibility of scuffing and soiling between daily cleaning. With slip resistance meeting HSE standards, Mirica is ideal for use in busy areas such as corridors within schools and colleges, and any other areas where a safe, durable surface is required. It will withstand daily wear and tear, providing excellent resistance to scuffing, staining and impact.

Easy to clean and designed with appearance retention in mind, we hope that Altro Mirica will help to keep floors in schools looking good for many years to come.
