Sharp launches WriteView calculator for Secondary school students
Published:  15 May, 2007

Sharp Electronics (UK) Ltd has today launched the EL-W531B/GB WriteView calculator aimed at secondary school students.

The calculator encourages students to fully understand problems they are solving by displaying lines of formula in correct text. The screen displays up to four lines of text simultaneously and the ‘multi-line playback’ facility allows students to scroll back through previous calculations and recall previous answers.

The EL-W531B/GB also comes with PC emulation software. The software, designed for use with data projectors and interactive whiteboards, allows each step within a problem to be demonstrated to a student group who can follow it on their individual calculators. The PC emulation software is included free with an order of 30 or more calculator units.

Sharp has also developed a comprehensive set of support material for both teachers and students. The resource pack includes an operation manual, pupil worksheets, teacher worksheets and details of Sharp’s UK website on which more documentation and classroom materials are held. The worksheets, which include problems, points for discussion and ideas for extended study, encourage students to selfdevelop their understanding of the EL-W531B/GB WriteView’s extended functionality and capability.

“Sharp has developed this calculator with students’ needs front of mind,” said Grace Liang, Product Manager, Sharp. “Following mathematical instructions with no visual aid is really frustrating. However, the PC software of the WriteView directly addresses the problem and makes complicated calculations easy to follow, perform and understand.”

The battery operated ELW531B is priced at £8.49, while the dual-powered (battery and solar)

EL-W531GB, which has identical functionality, is priced at £10.99. Both models will be available from education dealers and suppliers including Oxford Educational Supplies from the end of May 2007.
