Collinson plc completed the construction of a four-court indoor tennis centre at Writhlington School, Bath and North East Somerset in November 2008.  With the previous two-court facility insufficient for their tennis development program, the school wanted to increase the facilities to four new covered courts and being at the top of the Mendip hills they needed a structure that would withstand the windy conditions!

The new centre is dedicated to tennis and has been built to full Lawn Tennis Association standards.  The Challenger™ Sports Hall was supplied by main contractor Collinson plc who also completed the internal fit out including lighting and ventilation systems.

The Challenger system is based on a clear span, steel frame with lattice stanchions and exposed trusses.  This modular system is renowned for it’s efficiency and can be erected within a matter of weeks without the need for internal columns or supports.  The frame is covered with a tensioned PVC coated membrane which acts to enhance the playing environment with natural light, ensuring the courts are bright and airy.  Profiled colour coated cladding had also been added to a height of 3m on the exterior.

The internal layout offers an ideal area for tennis:  the green and blue colours chosen by the school create a calming positive atmosphere.  The lighting system is designed to ensure optimum playing conditions late into the night.

Mandy Stonier the Tennis Development Officer for Writhlington Tennis Centre was thrilled at achieving LTA Clubmark status.  Mandy said ‘the operation of the new facility is easy and manageable for everything including the roller door, curtains and lighting’.  She continued to say ‘membership at all levels has increased greatly since they opened, the wow factor is unbelievable’
