The 6th Annual Conference on Restorative Approaches in Schools and Residential Care
Thursday 25th and Friday 26th February 2010 in York
Published:  22 January, 2010

People in the field of education are beginning to question the use of ‘carrots and sticks’ to motivate young people to behave in pro-social ways and to make the most of their school experience. This ‘behaviourist’ strategy is at odds with attempts to develop social and emotional skills and responsible citizenship amongst young people. Many educationalists and practitioners believe it is time to adopt a new approach. In response to this, a growing number of schools and residential homes in the UK are changing their culture and adopting a restorative approach to relationships and behaviour.

The 6th Annual Conference on Restorative Approaches in Schools and Residential Care which is taking place on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th February 2010 at the Royal York Hotel, York will focus on this culture change from rewards and sanctions to relationships based on restorative approaches. The conference is focusing on two key themes. Firstly, it will examine ways of implementing a cultural change away from “rewards and sanctions” towards more successful alternatives, and secondly it will examine and evaluate the progress of restorative approaches in educational settings and the outcomes from using these approaches.

This annual conference has grown each year to become the popular ‘home’ conference for all those working restoratively with young people in schools, educational units and residential care. The conference attracts delegates from a variety of educational fields including; schools, youth offending teams, residential care, local authorities and the voluntary sector.

The conference is organised by Public Sector Strategies on behalf of Transforming Conflict – the National centre for Restorative Approaches in Youth Settings. For more information on the work of Transforming Conflict please go to www.transformingconflict.org
