A Northumberland head teacher has complained that some lessons at his school have to take place in cupboards and store rooms due to a lack of space.
Maurice Hall made his comments about facilities at the Duchess's Community School in Alnwick during a debate on the future of schooling in the town.
He has been backed by local MP, Alan Beith who has described the conditions as appalling.
The county council says it is working to resolve the problems.
Mr Hall spoke at Alnwick District Council's state of the district debate.
Council leader Heather Cairns said: "Although education is not a district council function it is an issue that concerns almost every one of us.
"In Alnwick we desperately need a new high school to replace the Duchess's High School, as this building is in my opinion, now unfit for its purpose."
