Finding the right hardware for your school or college can be just as much of a headache as finding your way through the maze of new software constantly coming to market. From wireless networked devices to sophisticated all-in-one machines that can print, copy, scan and fax – and even translate documents – how do you decide which is right for you?
As a leading supplier of office printing technology to schools for more than 25 years, Brother is ideally placed to guide you through the maze. We have an international reputation for providing reliable products at exceptional value for money – backed by an aftercare service that’s second to none.
Save time with network management software
For large schools and colleges spread over different sites, managing a large suite of printers can be a nightmare. Simon Cox, IT hardware engineer at Croydon College, found that looking after the college’s 280 printers, on three different sites, was a full-time job. He spent most of his day out on calls, often visiting a site twice to diagnose and fix the problem. But thanks to Brother’s user-friendly BR-Admin network management software, Simon’s job has been transformed.
The software, which comes free with every new Brother networked printer such as the HL-5270DN, means that the status of every printer on the network can be monitored by a network administrator on their own PC.
The system has saved Simon vital time – and provided a quicker, more efficient service for the college’s 1,000 academic staff and 16,000 full and part-time students. Simon said: “When users call me to highlight a problem, I can go into BR-Admin and load that machine’s icon onto my desktop. I can then view a web page for that machine which will tell me exactly what is happening.
“I used to spend most of my day out of the office and much of that was spent identifying simple and easily-solved problems. Now, BR-Admin does that for me and I have the time to look at and resolve bigger issues.”
Go wireless for flexible printing
Space is often at a premium in most schools and finding room for the various equipment and cables can be tricky. Wireless networking is becoming more popular as schools require the flexibility to share printers across the school. They also provide a practical option for the school office where users can enjoy the freedom and space a cable-free environment offers.
We have developed a range of wireless products, available for under £200, which incorporate print, copy, scan and fax capabilities into one desktop machine – including the MFC-640CW, the MFC-820CW and the DCP-750CW (print, copy and scan only). All products come with a one year on-site warranty and use single ink cartridges – this means a cost saving because, unlike combined cartridges, when one colour runs out it can be replaced separately and unused ink doesn’t have to be thrown away.
Custom-made solutions for the classroom
We have been working with Dave Fortune, manager of the water based screen printing area at the University of West England, on a technically complex project to produce affordable half tone positives on laser film for screen printing using Brother’s colour laser printer, HL-2700CN.
Dave explains: “We knew that a black and white postscript laser printer could produce half tone positives using Adobe Photoshop, but we couldn’t produce half tones using a colour laser printer. Working with Brother we have found an affordable way for schools, colleges and universities to produce film positives for not only screen printing, but also litho printing, etching and flexography. Our research means that educational establishments need only have one machine to suit all purposes, rather than a colour and a mono printer.”
Buy Brother and support sustainable technology
For schools and colleges supporting sustainability, Brother is leading the way. We have been recognised by the recently-published Good Office Guide as the leading environmental and ethical provider of printers, faxes and all-in-one machines.
And we’re the only manufacturer to achieve TCO ‘99 accreditation – the world’s toughest environmental standard – for our printers. Forty one of our laser printers and all-in-one machines now carry the TCO badge – meaning they are easy to recycle, produce fewer harmful emissions, and are safer to use, thanks to their ergonomic design.
