Sovereign wins second phase of outdoor play installation at Springside
Published:  19 August, 2009

Following on from the completion of a successful installation in 2008, Sovereign Play Equipment has been awarded the second phase in the outdoor play development at Springside with Hamer Learning Community in Rochdale.

Jane Herring, Head Teacher of Springside School commented: "Sovereign listened very carefully and really understood the needs of the children when the first stage of work was carried out last year. This success led us to asking them to return and discuss further designs for four different areas on the site."

Springside with Hamer Learning Community is the result of a recent merger between mainstream primary Hamer, and Springside which caters for pupils with special needs.

"As it was a new school, there were no existing play facilities and so it was a blank canvas. Fellow Headteacher of Hamer, Jan Smith and I wanted to create a well constructed, interesting play area that would not only cater for all the pupils, but encourage them to interact." Ms Herring continued.

The first phase designed and installed by Sovereign included playground markings for Hamer that incorporated skipping zones, activity trails and traditional hopscotch areas. For Springside there were colourful playground markings along with sensory music panels. The shared area consisted of two low-level wooden adventure trails with rubber grass saver tiles underneath.

The second phase just awarded goes a step further and will provide four new areas that include: a sensory area (shielded from UV rays by an eight-metre sail shade canopy, adventure trail equipment, a climbing tower and an outdoor classroom area protected by a waterproof octagonal gazebo."

"Right from the start, Sovereign has come up with creative ideas about how to adapt equipment in a cost effective way. There is no doubt that the work done by Sovereign has and will provide the pupils with a safe, fun and interesting learning facility that aids their educational, emotional and physical development." Ms Herring concluded.
