UCU comment on fee rises as loans and grants are frozen
Published:  02 July, 2009

Commenting on the news today (Wednesday) that university tuition fees will rise by 2.04% next year, but student grants and loans will remain frozen at last year's rates, the University and College Union (UCU) said the announcement did little to persuade people that the government was serious about education not becoming a victim of the recession.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: "This is a kick in the teeth for the thousands of people who have already applied to university. We should be doing all we can during these difficult times to make education and learning as accessible as possible. For all the Prime Minister's warm words and promises that education would not become a victim of the recession, we are yet to see any actions to back up his rhetoric."
