Kingswood Primary School makes better use of their data to improve school performance
Published:  25 March, 2009

A school's Management Information System (MIS) traditionally sits in the school office collecting data for the DCSF. That includes a wide range of information about your pupils including attendance, behaviour and assessment data. So, if your school already collect this data for the DCSF (a statutory requirement), what's stopping you from using it to inform decisions in the classroom?

Teachers' access to school MIS data has been limited for various reasons, one of which is the technological limitations of a more traditional school MIS. IntegrisG2 is designed to be different. It is completely web-delivered which means that access in the classroom becomes much less of a problem; all you need is a web-browser and a secure log-in.

Kingswood Primary School in Lambeth quickly saw the advantages this offered and have been using IntegrisG2 for over two years now. One of their main motivations for moving was the flexible approach to data management IntegrisG2 offered and the difference it would make to assessment analysis. An earlier Ofsted inspection identified the need to improve the school's pupil assessment tracking. By integrating assessment data and analysis into IntegrisG2, Kingswood Primary School improved their grading to ‘Outstanding' in their last Ofsted inspection.

Head Teacher Stephen Hall says "There is so much data in a school and things change so quickly that to be able to collect data and manage it in one integrated system meant huge time savings for us and a much more efficient way of doing things."

Kingswood Primary School is a diverse school and serves a disadvantaged area of London. A high proportion of their pupils don't have English as their first language, pupil mobility is very high and the attainment level of their pupils on entry is below the national average. These conditions present Stephen and his teaching staff with quite a challenge.

The system has been developed to be adaptable. Not every school is working under the same conditions so a school MIS needs to cater to thosedifferences. Kingswood Primary School has used IntegrisG2 to create their own personalised markbooks which have made it easier for their teachers to collect the relevant assessment data and work with this data in the classroom, office or home.

Teachers used to collect their assessment data on separate spreadsheets which made whole school analysis very difficult and time consuming. So by integrating the collection and analysis of assessment data into IntegrisG2 teachers can now track their pupils' progress much more easily enabling them to make more informed decisions.

The analysis tools within IntegrisG2 have really made a difference to Kingswood Primary School. They are able to add contextual information into their markbooks so that they can concentrate on a specific cohort of pupils, for example all those pupils who don't have English as their first language. They can then compare this group of pupils against those who do have English as their first language. Stephen Hall says "Being able to view data from across the whole school and compare groups of pupils against one another and against national averages, has made it easier to identify trends, track pupil progress against where we expect them to be and identify those pupils who are struggling. The earlier we can identify problems, the quicker we can put them right."

The flexibility of the system has even helped the school with recent Ofsted inspections. It's so easy to pull in contextual information into a markbook that ad hoc information requests from their Ofsted Inspector were much more easily dealt with than before.

Kingswood Primary School is an excellent example of how a school can make better use of data they already have at their finger-tips. To see how IntegrisG2 could make a difference to your school please visit www.integrisg2.com or call RM on 01943 46 33 46.
