Free activity days for students
Published:  01 February, 2007

UK-based educational charity, The Smallpeice Trust has joined forces with Airbus, one of the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers, to offer 750 students the opportunity to participate in free Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) days in secondary schools across the UK.

The first course will take place today at Mangotsfield School in Bristol with further courses scheduled throughout February and March.

Year 8 and 9 students will get the chance to gain real life experience working in small groups, designing and making a crane capable of transporting wing components between two sites. The session will enhance their understanding of, and aptitude for, problem solving, creativity, design and engineering with the winning teams being judged on aesthetics, cost, material moved, teamwork, stability and structural integrity.

One outstanding individual from each school will receive a place on a Year 9 four-day residential course run by The Smallpeice Trust. The winners will be able choose from attending the ‘Engineering Experience’ course in Shropshire in April or the ‘Marine technology’ course in Southampton in July.

STEM sessions form part of a highly respected and professionally executed programme of tiered schemes offered by The Smallpeice Trust to young people aged 13 – 18. The Trust also offers 4-day residential courses in a variety of exciting subjects such as motorsport, marine technology, robotics, materials and supercomputing.
