For automatic systems, there are two important factors to consider. The first is the number of detectors. A risk analysis will indicate the minimum requirements, but the Chief Fire Officers' Association (CFOA) recommends additional detectors in schools and other public buildings to ensure fast response to fires.
The second factor is false alarms, for which the CFOA has introduced a three-tier policy. The top tier is normal response - usually despatch of a fire tender under emergency (flashing blue light) conditions.
Systems that produce regular false alarms are downgraded to tier 2 - a tender is despatched under non-emergency conditions, and can be diverted to a confirmed fire. Persistent false alarms lead to a move to tier 3, where a fire officer is sent to investigate the problem before a tender is despatched.
Unlike older products, the latest detectors virtually eliminate false alarms and Siemens Building Technologies Fire Safety is even offering a guarantee against false alarms (GAFA) with its new Sinteso products.
These issues have important implications for life safety, and also have other repercussions, such as increased insurance premiums. Perhaps now is the time, therefore, to take a good look at your fire protection!
