Exploring the academy status: knowledge sharing and innovation make the good, outstanding

As it stands, about one in every six schools in England is an academy, and with the government pushing for all state-funded schools to become academies, which are outside of council control, this figure is expected to rise.

Hillyfield School overcomes legal challenges to become Academy

When the new Government announced their drive to create a new swathe of Academies, many schools registered their interest. Choosing to convert to an Academy is an extremely significant decision for any school to take. By opting out of council control they have the freedom to determine their own policies on things like the curriculum, school hours, term dates and staff pay. It gives the freedom to take decisions that best suit their individual circumstances.

Breaking the cycle of debt

Last year’s ‘Money on our Minds’ consultation report from The Personal Finance Education Group (pfeg), revealed that issues surrounding money do not just affect adults. When consulted, 99% of the pupils involved stated they had a mobile phone, 80% have a bank account and 70% save regularly. When asked what financial topic they thought was most important to learn about, 77% said insurance yet only 8% of the 15 to 17 year olds consulted remember learning it in school.

Teaching pupils that tax matters

HMRC has launched a new teaching resource for secondary schools - Tax Matters.

The free, online interactive resource includes videos, quizzes and games, as well as key facts and figures, to help young people learn about tax and its role in society.
