The vision is clear - students get to trial latest in emergency eyebath facilities
Published:  10 July, 2008

As part of the health and safety directive in schools and colleges of further education, Showers & Eyebaths Services Ltd has been working with Greater Manchester-based Wigan and Leigh College in the provision of effective on-the-spot emergency eye and face wash facilities.

Showers & Eyebaths Services Ltd has provided two units, free of charge, to trial within the brickwork and car mechanic departments, both situated within the recently built state-of-the art college campus.

Craig Yates, managing director of Showers & Eyebaths Services said: "Eyes are precious and almost every workplace presents its own type of risks - whether from dust, grit, welding particles or splashes from acid and other hazardous substances. It is now strongly recommended by Health & Safety regulations that, alongside the necessity for safety glasses and gloves, an effective form of eyewash should be immediately available.

"It is important for us to obtain feedback from those using our emergency facilities as part of our continual research and development programme.

"The new brickwork and car mechanic facilities within Wigan & Leigh College are accessed via a number of corridors, stairways and fire and safety access doors.   This provided an ideal scenario to trial a shared portable eye and face wash facility which allows a decontamination facility to be brought immediately and directly to the victim."

Martin Long, head of the brickwork department said: "We are delighted with the provision of these eye and face wash units which suit both the conditions and layout of our new department."

The E250 self-contained portable eye & face wash can be easily carried into action as soon as required and is ideal if the environment does not allow for a permanent, plumbed in piece of kit. The 18 litre stainless steel cylinder has a trigger operation with dust cover, and 1.5 metre flexible stainless steel hose allowing contaminants to be rinsed from any body part. The unit features simple, push-handle operation and complies fully with both ANSI and DIN standards. A trolley version with twin cylinders (Model GPW3) is also available, in which the waste water is collected in the underneath of the unit rather than spilling directly onto the floor.

The E65 eyebath is ideal for indoor, mains water installations and provides a gentle, even stream of aerated water to wash away contamination.
