Failsafe foundation for school IT infrastructure
Published:  19 June, 2008

GOAL Graveney School in Tooting, South London, is heavily dependent on connected IT for class work and registration but its wireless network was proving unreliable. The school needed a way to manage the network so it could become a failsafe foundation for its considerable IT infrastructure.

3Com Wireless LAN Controller WX2200, with Wireless LAN Managed Access Points 2750 providing:

  • Reliable, uninterrupted wireless connectivity for the whole of the school
  • Ability to register pupils digitally wherever they are
  • Quick, efficient access to over 400 applications for staff and pupils from all classrooms
  • Easy network management for IT staff
  • Many hours of maintenance time saved every week
  • Possibility of installation of IP telephony
  • Easy scalability
The school canot predict what hardware and applications will be used in five years' time, and the network has to be able to deal with whatever we throw at it. They are satisfied the 3Com product will be able to do that."

In the future, the school will continue to upgrade its IT system. For example, it is running a trial where all teachers and two classes have been given PDAs, all connected to the network. This has been made possible through the flexibility and reliability of the wireless network. The 3Com solution gives the school the possibility of installing IP telephony, which would represent a great cost saving for the school.
