Schools prepare to sell electricity
Published:  10 April, 2008

Following the government's statement that new school buildings will only receive government funding if they are designed to produce no carbon footprint, Conport Structures are offering their new Solar NorthlightTM classroom, which more than meets these requirements.

Because Conport have teamed up with a DTI-approved Framework Supplier, the government has agreed that 50% of the cost of the solar panels that generate the power for the school will be paid for by the state.

The new Solar Northlight will allow schools to sell their excess power back to the national grid. This is ideal for schools and colleges who will be able to sell their solar energy during the summer when the establishment is closed for the long vacation.

Because the windows all face north, Conport Northlights have always offered maximum light for minimum solar heat gain. The new Solar Northlight offers a real "double whammy" because the pitched roofs all face south, ideal for solar panels which receive maximum sunlight all day at the optimum angle. No other roof design offers this combination of maximum light without solar heat gain from the north-facing side plus optimized free solar energy from the south-facing side.

So efficient is the Solar NorthlightTM that the solar panels for one classroom generate enough power to run 36 computers at once, saving around £500 on electricity costs and over 9 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year over a lifetime of 25 years or more.
