Performance ceilings
Published:  10 April, 2008

Knauf AMF ceilings have been specified for three new schools in the London Borough of Lewisham as part of a £60m PFI investment programme.  One of these is Forest Hill Secondary, a specialist Performing Arts School for boys.

The school has been reconfigured as a new three-storey block arranged around a glazed courtyard, with the exception of the new Sports Hall and Art Block.  The courtyard area provides a recreational focus for the school, as well as a dining facility, assembly hall and performing arts space.  The use of the courtyard for concerts and stage shows meant that a high degree of sound absorption and attenuation was required.  The installation of newly designed Knauf AMF Thermatex Baffles and Thermatex Alpha ceiling tiles in this area enhances these characteristics, ensuring the entire audience can fully appreciate each performance.

All the classrooms were fitted with AMF's Fine Stratos Micro Perforated ceiling tiles. These lightly textured sanded tiles have a clean crisp appearance while their acoustic properties help to create a better learning environment by providing greater speech intelligibility and noise reduction, which can improve concentration.

Sebastian Wasienko of DW Contractors commented: "As a specialist Performing Arts School, it was essential to create the right acoustic environment at Forest Hill.  AMF's baffles and acoustic ceiling tiles have provided the perfect solution both for the classrooms and particularly in the courtyard performance area."
