Inspirational school design that knows no bounds
Published:  10 April, 2008

With words and symbols from global cultures etched into its outside walls to striking effect, the Hadley Learning Community development, in Telford, is an inspirational asset to an entire community.

Yet amazingly, this highly intricate work was created using pre-cast reconstructed stone cladding - the unsung hero of modern construction.

Supplied by Trent Concrete, it highlights how the public sector is pioneering the latest pre-cast technology to bring incredible architectural designs to life, without breaking the bank.

This is giving school designers a new creative freedom to integrate elaborate, emotive structures that will enhance the learning environment for everyone who uses them.

In total, Trent crafted more than 3,000 square metres of buff-coloured reconstructed stone cladding panels for the cog-wheel shaped site. Hundreds of metres of fascia panels and plinth units supplied the final touch of class.

The bold lettering was created using a dual mix finish. A smooth, light shade formed the main panel, while deeper acid etching was filled with inspirational letters and words - such as ‘C' for ‘Creativity' and ‘L' for ‘Learning' - repeated in a multitude of languages and symbols.

A landmark £70 million PFI development, the Hadley Learning Community project demanded high standards and a fast build programme. Trent's off site construction methods and just in time delivery meant Aedas Architects and Main Contractor Interserve Project Services easily met the tight deadlines.

The Hadley Learning Community includes a 1,200 place secondary school, the relocated Bridge Special School and a 420 place primary school.

Other facilities, available to the whole community, include a crèche, nursery and childcare support, health services for young children, a learning resource centre, 150 seat theatre, café, swimming pool, fitness gym and sports pitches.
