The company was in operation for over 250 years and was a major employer in the Suffolk area employing a workforce of over 100. Following administration this number was reduced to 46.
The company has now been bought over by Sperrin Metal Products Ltd, a leading storage manufacturer that produces racking, shelving, mezzanines and lockers. Sperrin Metal has been in operation for nearly 50 years and currently employs around 100 employees at its other locations in Northern Ireland.
Director Peter Gormley expressed a commitment to uphold the current workforce. He stated "As a family run business based in Ireland we know the importance of sustaining a local conscientious workforce. It is our intention to continue business as usual."
Sperrin Metal acquired the business due to the high profile and reputation Helmsman enjoys in the locker and leisure trade. It is their intention to continue this tradition. The company is currently undergoing a restructuring program and will continue to operate from their offices in Suffolk, manufacturing the same wide locker range.
Director Peter Gormley expressed his belief that this merger will bring additional benefits to Helmsman customers as it is now able to offer a turnkey solution to all locker and shelving requirements. Having a business in the same line we hope that the organisation can develop and continue to hold a stronge position in the marketplace.
