BETT 2008 - Efficiency in schools
Published:  12 March, 2008

To all intents and purposes the school classroom has remained unchanged in its basic design for over 50 years. There is a teacher with a teacher's desk, and there are pupils and students who sit and write at their desks.

When the IT revolution came along the instant reaction was to create the "IT Room" in which a class set of computers was installed. The pupils moved into the IT room for IT lessons - and back to their regular classrooms for all other lessons.

IT was always intended to become part of the general curriculum, included in and influencing every subject and every lesson. It's harder to achieve this if IT is isolated in its own room.

The only efficient solution must be one that involves the introduction of school desks incorporating computer equipment which, when not in use, slips back into a secure housing within the desk.

Such transformation would be pointless if it were not combined with security - and in this regard the Verso Desk (as it is known) actually offers better security than the conventional IT suite. When each computer is locked away in its own individual desk then the thief is slowed down - giving a chance for the police to turn up and make an arrest before everything is removed.

The Verso comes in various formats; including one that is suitable for music rooms where IT work is now a mainstay of class music lessons.
