Between 4% and 6% of the world's population is estimated to be dyscalculic. Unlike dyslexia, an understanding of what dyscalculia is and how dyscalculic children and students can be helped is far from common among educationalists. Formal recognition that a child is dyslexic will lead to help in most examination settings, the same does not apply to dyscalculic children. Indeed, even where an educational psychologist writes a report to say that a child suffers from the disability, little then changes. This is not because the school is remiss in its attitude - it is more often that no one quite knows what to do. There is no widely recognised national or international body to look after the needs of the dyscalculic individual.
However, one organisation that is hoping to change this and is already helping a large number of students with maths problems is ConquerMaths - run by Val Constable who is herself dyscalculic.
The ConquerMaths online system is an individualised approach to learning maths which is already being used by thousands of people across the UK.
