South Yorkshire students launch vocational education campaign
Published:  15 February, 2008

The four local authorities in South Yorkshire are aiming to increase awareness of and participation in 14-19 vocational education in the region. The ‘Hands On' campaign targets youngsters in Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster, and is a response to the demands from Government, employers and universities that students be equipped with the knowledge, understanding and skills that prepare them for the world of work. The campaign also targets teachers by offering free resources.

The campaign

was launched at the end of last year with 10 local students representing the 10,000 14-19 year-olds who already study work-related courses across the region. The campaign highlights the benefits of young people getting their ‘Hands On' vocational qualifications and the industries providing the greatest employment potential for young people in South Yorkshire, including Engineering and Manufacturing, Creative and Digital Media, Retail, and Catering and Hospitality.

Alison Firth, Marketing Manager of the campaign, says: "Students aged 14-19 in South Yorkshire can choose from a whole range of courses, whether an NVQ alongside their GCSEs or vocational A levels in subjects that really interest them. Not only are they hands-on, but they lead to nationally recognised qualifications that colleges and universities value because of the employability skills they provide."

The advertising campaign is running on billboards, bus interiors, phone kiosks, bus and tram stops and local newspapers across the region. More information about vocational education and jobs in South Yorkshire, including testimonials from students currently getting their ‘Hands On' work-related skills, careers and qualifications, is on a new website  www.voced.co.uk where South Yorkshire schools and colleges can also access a selection of free resources.
