Managed Learning Environments
Published:  15 February, 2008

The government's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) initiative aims to provide schools with Managed Learning Environments (MLEs) that can record the nutritional value of the school meals that children are buying. Michael Murdock, Northgate Education's BSF Solutions Director, explains more:

"It is a well recognised point of view that if a child does not have a balanced nutritional intake, there is likely to be an impact on learning. For example, concentration can lapse and there may be an increase in undesirable behaviour. By recording nutritional statistics schools can educate children, ideally from a young age, on the benefits of eating properly.

"Northgate Education has designed N-able, a new MLE that provides schools with detailed information on pupil meal purchases that can be broken down into salt, caffeine, vegetable and fruit intake. It works in conjunction with a cashless catering system so the data is logged automatically and serious issues, including too much fat or sugar in the diet, are highlighted for staff to deal with appropriately. At Key Stages 1 and 2 it is possible for the school to use N-able to make this information available online for parents."
