Self sustaining centre
Published:  15 February, 2008

Offsite construction specialist Framework CDM has gone wild with the creation of a self sustaining visitors centre for the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

Lower Moor Farm, near Oaksey, has been designed to inspire anyone who sees it to adopt a greener lifestyle and is an integral feature of the new, 96-acre nature reserve. A triumph of collaboration, the project required close working between the Trust, Framework and project architects Mark Ellerby, and evolved as further funds for the scheme were secured.

Framework provided its innovative system of offsite pre-engineering and on site construction. It consists of a number of pre-engineered, panelised, semi-volumetric components - used to create walls, floors and ceilings - that are produced offsite and then delivered to site for simple, fast track construction.

Once delivered, the panelised cassettes, which are pre-fitted with the building services, can be constructed in a fraction of the time of traditional construction.

Such efficient integration of building techniques allows Framework to condense the design, fabrication and construction of the buildings. The panelised system, created using material from sustainable sources, also offers airtight construction, lower embodied energy use, lower energy consumption, lower life cycle costs and best value. This meets the Trust's desire for a building that would act as a standard bearer for sustainable construction.
