Working with Kidzsmart, one of the UKs leading publishers of custom media for children, the Service has developed a new concept ‘Play it Safe' animation.
The animated DVD - the first of its kind in the country - has been created to deliver safety messages to children in Years 2 - 4. It uses the character ‘Bleeper' (a smoke alarm) and his friend ‘Battery', and includes characters from the well-known Miss Dorothy education materials.
The messages include fire safety in the home, bonfire safety, escape plans, fire drills and road safety information.
The initiative is to be rolled out throughout South Yorkshire schools this year. The DVD will be taken into schools and shown alongside a fun-packed presentation by fire safety staff.
Explains Kidzsmart spokeswoman Michelle Gunnery: "This innovative approach to educating youngsters in the important field of home safety issues reaches out, not only to young people, but also their parents - who are notoriously difficult to target with safety messages. To hit the message home with parents we have developed extra materials, such as questionnaires which children take home, fill in with their parents and bring back into their classroom."
Now the message could spread even further, with a number of Fire Services across the country showing interest and planning to adopt the same education programme.
